Please note that we have closed our waiting list for our current properties in Holland Park.  We are accepting expressions of interest in our new scheme near Hampton Court, which we expect to be open in late 2025 or 2026, and will contact enquirers nearer the time about this.

The Sheppard Trust is an almshouse charity founded by Miss Elizabeth Sheppard in 1855 that provides sheltered housing for older women in housing need.

We are developing a new scheme for independent living with access to care and support services, near Hampton Court.  For more details please read the future page of our website and the news updates.

View Our Criteria

Applicants need to:

  • be aged 65 years or older
  • be in need, hardship or distress  (for example, low income, low capital resources, qualifying for benefits,  insecure/poor housing, not able to find/afford suitable housing.  We will not normally consider applicants who own property or have more than £75,000 in capital)
  • agree to abide our statement of community values, which are based on the Christian faith of our founder.   These are kindness, consideration and compassion to others, community spirit and co-operation, and respect for everyone’s rights, differences, dignity and choices.

We also expect that at the point of entry residents should be in good health and able to look after themselves and their flats (with a support/care package in place if applicable).

An Important Note About The Future

While the Trust’s flats are well maintained and are in an attractive neighbourhood, they are converted Victorian houses and present a number of practical difficulties especially for those who develop mobility issues or care and support needs in their later years.

The trustees have therefore decided in principle to sell the properties in Lansdowne Walk and to develop a brand new high quality housing scheme in another location. This will provide much better facilities to enable continued independence for residents for the rest of their lives, with on-site support and care available as and when it is needed.  It also means we will be able to help more women in need of housing.

We now have planning permission for a site near Hampton Court, with a view to moving there possibly in 2025. It is a lovely location near the river and with transport links to a range of shopping and leisure areas.

When the move takes place, all residents living in the Trust’s accommodation will be guaranteed a home in the new property.  We also expect to offer places to all those on our waiting list. We hope that potential applicants will not be put off by the prospect of moving again. The resulting facilities will only improve our offering and enhance our outstanding record of achievement to date.
